Sitting in Recovery

This is a facilitated meditation focused addiction recovery group open to anyone who feels they have a substance or behavioural addiction and would like to explore how meditation can support them in their recovery.

About the group

If addiction can be thought of as a means to escape our perceived reality (our feelings, emotions, and the situations we find ourselves in), then meditation can be thought of as deeply connecting with reality as it actually is. In this way, meditation, as a practice, is an antidote to our perpetual need to escape; we learn to step into the current moment without the need to escape or change it. By delving into it, we see the world and ourselves as we truly are; and find less and less need to escape it.

Sitting in Recovery is a facilitated meditation focused recovery group. No particular membership is required, open to any fellowship or background, any or no faith. This group provides a space for those in recovery to practice meditation as a group of like minded individuals who are all on the journey to recovery.

Join us as we deepen your  meditation practice and explore its connection with addiction recovery.

Join us

1 / Introduction to Sitting

Join us at EPIC Recovery (743 Wellington Rd) on Mondays at 5pm for an introduction to meditation where we will learn the basics of a meditation practice and how it relates to our recovery journey.

No experience needed but we suggest you attend this prior to joining the other sittings. This is a free event open to anyone in the broader recovery community.

2 / Sitting in Recovery weekly sitting

This is the weekly sitting group for those in recovery held on Tuesday evenings at 7pm at The Zendo (215 William St). The group opens with a 25 minute meditation (sitting) followed by discussion and question/answer period. Join us for some warmth and fellowship.

The Zendo is a formal zen meditation practice centre. Cushions and stools are provided. There is a suggested donation of $5-10 per sitting to help pay for the facility. However, donations are based on the principle of dana and no one will ever be turned away.

Please register on the events page as seating is limited.

3 / Fearless, Blameless, Thorough

Starting Spring 2026

This is a facilitated and self paced step study group. It is an opportunity to work with a group as you do your steps in your chosen fellowship and is not meant to replace any existing sponsor relationship you may have. It is an chance to work on our steps as a group with others, guided by fellow travellers who have worked the steps before.

Our goal is emotional sobriety and as such we use texts, tools, and approaches from numerous fellowships to create a more complete approach to our recovery. With specific emphasis on steps 1 and 4, we add in several tools from established fellowships that have a proven track record of helping us through the process with compassion.

The format of the group is what is known as a "challenge group" meaning as we share we can grant permission to others to challenge us on our thinking and approach. These challenges are optional and delivered with a spirit of genuine care and compassion and are not meant to harm or compare. We offer our experience, strength, and hope to each other such that we can all grow in emotional sobriety in our lives.

Please reach out to info@sittinginrecovery.org if you are interested in learning more and participating.
